Designing the sloped front garden in Dulwich presented a unique challenge with the imperative inclusion of Sustainable Urban Drainage System (SUDS) drainage. For the driveway, a blend of resin-bound gravel and durable granite setts was chosen. Given Dulwich Estate's recommendation of 50% planting, accommodating this while ensuring space for three parked cars required a thoughtful approach.
The plant selection prioritized structural elements with a focus on evergreen varieties, complemented by the softening touches of Rosa 'Tottering By Gently,' Agapanthus africanus, and Hydrangea paniculata 'Limelight.' The inclusion of ornamental grasses and an array of spring bulbs added seasonal interest and texture to the landscape.
To meet Dulwich Estate's request for a feature tree, the clients opted for a Liriodendron tulipifera. This feature tree not only fulfilled the regulatory requirement but also added a distinctive focal point to replace the tree being removed.
The resulting design successfully integrated aesthetic appeal, practicality, and sustainability, creating a front garden that harmonizes with the guidelines set by Dulwich Estate while providing a welcoming and visually engaging entrance to the property.
